This is a Spanish series on Netflix that came out in 2018, that is loosely based on the attack in Barcelona, in August of 2017, where a white van killed pedestrians on Las Ramblas, the famous avenue in the city. However, this series takes place in Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Region in Spain, where many terrorists have come from. During the eight episodes, we learn that a young Arab man is wrongfully incriminated for this crime, and we see how the search for him plays out. Along the way, there are many twists and turns, some of which we don’t see coming at all. The show does a great job of not just encapsulating the plot line into one small season, but with throwing curve balls that the viewer does not necessarily anticipate. Nowadays, that is very difficult to do. Most shows have run their course with long seasons, using anything they can to stretch the series out. Victim Number 8 does not do that: it lets the entire story end during the eighth and final episode. Throughout the journey, the viewer will understand the motive for the crime and the guilty party. They will empathize with the main characters: Omar (the suspect) and his girlfriend, Edurne. They will hear some Basque language and get to travel with the characters all around Bilbao, and briefly to Madrid, where a couple of episodes take place. But will they get closure at the very end? You’ll have to see to find out!
This is a limited series still available on Netflix. They have subtitles both in Spanish and in English. Due to violence, nudity, and some other promiscuous scenes, I would only recommend this to anyone 18 or over. However, I do highly recommend this, despite the cast not having any big-name actors – I thought the acting was superb and I really enjoyed this series, and hopefully, you will too!
