Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego, Mariana Enriquez

This book is a collection of short stories that take place all over Argentina.  Normally I’m not one to read short stories and thus prefer novels, but it was recommended by Amazon given my recent purchases and I thought it would be fun to try something new.  There are 11 short stories before we arrive to the epic one, the one that this title represents.  What all of these stories have in common is violence and fear.  Many of these stories talk about disappearances, attacks and ultimately, death.

I’m not going to lie, it is a bit vicious and if you’re hesitant to buy it just by reading this recap alone, I’d probably say, skip it.  I did, however, thoroughly enjoy it and devoured it in a day.  The narration, the many different characters and the plot lines made each story feel unique.  Also, the use of slang, vos and the descriptions of Argentina enrich the reader’s Spanish and hopefully inspires them to learn more about this beautiful country.  Despite the gory violence and the horrific femicides, the story ends with a somewhat powerful message to honor the victims and shed light on a country’s historic systemic homicides, with the hope that things will change: no más.
