This is an original Netflix series that came out a little over a year ago. As it was filmed in Bilbao, a city in the Basque Country in Spain, you will hear quite a bit of Euskara, also known as Basque language. However, this show is mostly in Spanish, and it moves quickly. We learn within the first 10 minutes that one woman commits suicide as another’s political life is ruined when a sex tape of her is released over social media. Although the characters’ lives are separate, these two incidents connect them in a very profound way. How? I’ll let you watch it to find out!
During the series, we learn about both victims – Malen and Ane. Malen, an important political figure (mayor of the city), tries to navigate her life after the scandal. Does she stand down and admit defeat? Or does she realize that she is the victim, and fight for her career? Meanwhile, Ane commits suicide over a similar issue – the distribution of a sex video and of racy pictures of her amongst her male colleagues at a factory. Do the foremen protect her? Unfortunately, through these incidences (and several more), we learn the difference between acting supportive and taking action to help these vulnerable women. It made me open my eyes to this pressing issue and how so many women stay silent out of shame. It also is a very good life lesson to all of us, but especially the youth: trust no one. When it comes to any form of photo or video of this nature that you have, never trust anyone with it, because relationships change, and resentment can make us do some very regrettable things. It could come at a very expensive cost as we’ve seen with Ane. Although this was a very gripping series, the topics are quite risqué. And even though I did say that there is a great lesson learned by the younger generations, I would not recommend it to any child. I would say at least 18 years old or more could handle this show, but I also recognize that students these days are watching everything. If you are in high school and would like to try this show out, please make sure you have a trusted adult to talk to about it. With that said, I would highly recommend it and hope that a second season comes out! Also, you might recognize a few of these actors, such as Itziar Ituño from Casa de Papel (Money Heist) and Marc Martínez from Hache. Both gave incredible performances, and I cannot wait to see what they do next!
